The former residence of Zhao Yuanren was built in the Emperor Xianfeng’s reign in the Qing dynasty (1850-1861). “Zhanyi” was continued to be used as the name of the house. Zhao Yuanren came back to Changzhou when he was nine years old, and spent his teenager years in “Zhanyi Hall”. Zhao Yuanren (1892-1982) was a famous linguist and musician. He was one of the “Four Great Masters” of Qinghua University.
